Anu's Laboratories—Progressing from ingredients to APIs

Beginning

The promoter of the Anu's Laboratories, K Hari Babu started the company in 1996 at Hyderabad. The company is engaged in the manufacture of intermediaries, servicing pharmaceutical companies in India and international markets. The board comprises of independent directors drawn from pharma, medical and auditing professionals. Individual functions are handled by qualified professionals.

Manufacturing site

The company has a manufacturing plant in Shadnagar and research and development centre in Balanagar which is located at the outskirts of Hyderabad. It has recently expanded its capacity to enhance production capacity for SMO from 480 MT to 750 MT and also coverage capacity for dichloro fluoro acetophenone (DCFA) to 165 MT from 120 MT.

In the pipeline

Anu's has two intermediates in the pipeline namely, iopamidol and DL naproxen, for the diagnosing and analgesic therapeutic segments respectively. Its first product was astrophenom, a drug intermediary, which is a major product in the production of DCFA. 60 percent of its total turnover comes from DCFA. The company has developed a zero discharge process by recovering by-products of commercial value from waste water and this project is implemented in most spheres of its operations. 40 percent of its investments are made in effluent treatment projects. Its intermediates are used for manufacturing antibiotics, cardiovascular and anti-allergic compounds. Giving the latest update, Hari Babu, Managing Director, Anu's informs, "Currently, we have five new products in the pipeline. A couple of them are expected to be commercialised in another two months. We are also expanding our research facility by adding latest equipment which is used in research and analytical activities."

People power

With a current manpower strength of 175 people, the company has plans to increase its capabilities. It has an international presence, spanning Israel, Europe, Singapore, Japan and USA. The company's current growth rate is over 40 percent. During the last financial year, it earned a total turnover of Rs 160 crore and is targeting to reach Rs 200 crore in the current fiscal.

Future plans

The company is setting up a state of art manufacturing facility, with a pilot plant, for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) at Vizag. Anu's intends to upgrade their product basket from ingredients to APIs and are sure that they can tie up as contract manufacturers with their existing client base.
